The ROI Is Your Research Foundation
Fifteen years ago, the ASTRO Board of Directors launched the Radiation Oncology Institute to invest in research to heighten the critical role of radiation therapy in the treatment of cancer because it is essential to the future of our field. ROI-funded studies about the lifesaving and quality of life benefits of radiation therapy are a critical component of the efforts to secure radiation oncology’s position as a leader in cancer care. The ROI is your research foundation, dedicated to improving outcomes for your patients and improving your practice.
From the beginning, the ROI has been focused on the most pressing needs of radiation oncology and the voices of practitioners like you. The ROI Research Agenda is based on the findings of an in-depth research needs assessment that assembled and analyzed the thoughts of hundreds of radiation oncology professionals nationwide. The top research priorities that emerged from this study of member perspectives serve as the cornerstone of the ROI’s research program: safety and quality, toxicity management, comparative effectiveness, value, and understanding and awareness.
The ROI Research Committee uses the Research Agenda to guide the development of the Institute’s annual requests for proposals (RFP) for new grants while also taking into account the current issues that are most important to you and all members of the radiation oncology community. The large response to the ROI’s two most recent RFPs on personalized radiation therapy and improving diversity and inclusion in radiation oncology shows that so many of you care about the topics that the ROI is seeking to address through our research portfolio. We are looking forward to sharing the announcement of new grants with you in May.
As your research foundation, the ROI is working for you to find solutions to some of the problems we face every day as we seek to improve care for our patients. The ROI relies on the generous gifts of donors like you to fund this vital research, and I invite you to make a gift today. Together, we can build a future for the field in which every patient who could benefit from radiation therapy receives the care that they need.
