Anand Shah, MD, MPH, of Columbia University, recently concluded his study titled "Economic Evaluation of SBRT versus Surgery for Stage I NSCLC."
In this ROI-funded grant, Dr. Shah:
- Developed novel episode-based Medicare payment definitions for SBRT to treat stage I NSCLC.
- Used the novel episode-based Medicare payment definitions to evaluate cost-effectiveness in academic and non-academic care settings.
- Gained methodological expertise that will contribute to payment reform efforts in radiation oncology and can be used in future efforts to formulate value-based, integrated oncology payment models.
A manuscript about the payment model is being prepared for submission to a peer-reviewed publication in fall 2016 and follow-on funding for related studies is being pursued by some of Dr. Shah’s colleagues.
