ROI Announces the 2018 Publication Award Winner

Honoring Research on the Comparative Effectiveness of Treatments for Aggressive Prostate Cancer

The Radiation Oncology Institute (ROI) has selected Amar U. Kishan, MD, to receive the 2018 Publication Award in recognition of the outstanding research published in the manuscript, “Radical Prostatectomy, External Beam Radiotherapy, or External Beam Radiotherapy With Brachytherapy Boost and Disease Progression and Mortality in Patients With Gleason Score 9-10 Prostate Cancer.” Dr. Kishan is first author on the paper and an assistant professor in the Departments of Radiation Oncology and Urology and a member of the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at UCLA. The article was published in JAMA, on March 6, 2018, and has quickly had an impact on practice.

Dr. Kishan built a multi-institutional consortium to compile the largest set of clinical data from prostate cancer patients with Gleason Score 9-10 ever reported in the literature—more than 1,800 patients from 12 institutions. Using this dataset, Dr. Kishan led the analysis comparing the clinical outcomes following three different types of treatment for this aggressive form of localized prostate cancer: radical prostatectomy, external beam radiotherapy, and external beam radiotherapy with a brachytherapy boost. This analysis was able to identify a significant benefit to prostate cancer–specific mortality and a longer time to distant metastasis with external beam radiotherapy with a brachytherapy boost compared to the other two treatment options.

The ROI selected the manuscript for the 2018 Publication Award because the findings are important evidence of the comparative effectiveness and value of radiation therapy that can be used to support its critical role in the treatment of aggressive localized prostate cancer. The manuscript has also garnered attention from press and the medical community, helping to elevate the profile of radiation therapy, and specifically brachytherapy, as an option for treating prostate cancer. In addition, the results already have been incorporated into UpToDate and were featured in the New England Journal of Medicine Journal Watch, demonstrating the potential for the research to have a lasting impact on the field of radiation oncology.

ROI President, Deborah A. Kuban, MD, FASTRO, will present the award to Dr. Kishan at the “Celebration of Giving” reception for ROI leadership donors on Monday, October 22. Dr. Kishan will also receive a $5,000 grant to build upon the research in the manuscript, which he plans to use to expand the multi-institutional consortium and extend the investigation to the general category of high-risk prostate cancer. “There is considerable heterogeneity in outcomes following definitive treatment for high-risk prostate cancer. Much like we now appreciate that there appear to be two subdivisions within intermediate-risk disease, there are likely subdivisions within high-risk disease. It will be important to identify what these are and determine if treatments should be tailored accordingly,” says Dr. Kishan.

Many excellent manuscripts were submitted and considered for the 2018 Publication Award, and the ROI is recognizing the following articles and first authors with Honorable Mentions:

  • “Evaluation of Classification and Regression Tree (CART) Model in Weight Loss Prediction Following Head and Neck Cancer Radiation Therapy” in Advances in Radiation Oncology, Zhi Cheng, MD, MPH
  • “Association of Circulating Tumor Cell Status With Benefit of Radiotherapy and Survival in Early-Stage Breast Cancer” in JAMA Oncology, Chelain Rae Goodman, MD, PhD
  • “Impact of Radiotherapy on Complications and Patient-Reported Outcomes After Breast Reconstruction” in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil
  • “RTAnswers Online Patient Education Materials Deviate from Recommended Reading Levels” in Applied Radiation Oncology, Stephen Rosenberg, MD

The ROI Publication Award recognizes the best scientific work published in the past year in one of the priority areas for radiation oncology that form the ROI’s research agenda: communication, safety and quality, toxicity management, comparative effectiveness and value. Many strong nominations were submitted, a positive sign of the growth in the evidence base of research demonstrating the life-saving and quality-of-life benefits of radiation therapy. The ROI is proud to honor Dr. Kishan with the 2018 Publication Award for his exceptional research that is helping to secure radiation oncology’s role in the treatment of aggressive localized prostate cancer.
